Map, Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica (New World Spheres with Land and Sea)

Beautiful reproduction of a hand-coloured world map circa 1630 by Henricus Hondius (1587-1638) for Mercator’s Atlas published between 1633 and 1658. This was the first map to show Dutch discoveries along the northern coast of Australia.

This double sphere map is grandly embellished by the four elements of fire, air, water and earth, and portraits of Julius Caesar & cartographers Claudius Ptolemy, Gerard Mercator, & Jodocus Hondius.  This map was reissued in Novus Atlas by map publisher Jan Jansson (1647-62) who married the daughter of Jodocus Hondius in 1612 and published maps with brother-in-law Henricus Hondius.

Size of map is 24 x 31 inches or 61 x 71cm
